Re: London Broncos
AFL used to be better when it was less about sport science and more about onfield thuggery.
League has gone some way down the same path.
The interstate teams ruin it for me too.

Re: London Broncos
AFL requires zero skill.

Just have to be able to run around and kick the ball a long way.

Can see why it's such a big game in Drongoland.

Re: London Broncos
The English clubs followed the Australian clubs in including nicknames as part of the actual team name. Though the older Australian clubs stuck with their traditional nicknames when they did it.
Now you have Warriors and Rhinos, but no more Loiners or Steam Pigs.
Just for marketing. Sydney Roosters is more marketable than Eastern Suburbs.
Union has some too. Sale Sharks for example.

The good news is that AFL is destroying rugby union in Australia. Game will disappear soon enough.
AFL player draft is on next month so the top 90 teenage athletes will be saved from having to endure that rugby shit.

I think Eddie and Stevo are still going. Eddie Waring is long dead though..

Re: London Broncos
Why has rugby league felt the need to have American-style sports club names?

And what stupid name would we get, if football was similarly infected?

West Ham Hammerheads?

Re: London Broncos
The Australian teams could be world beaters and I would still think it crap. But then that's how I feel about union in general.
I remember seeing an old union game between Australia and New Zealand in black and white. It was at Ballymore when there was a carpark next to the pitch. I thought it looked much more entertaining then.

Loved Rugby League back in the day. Ellery Hanley, Shaun Edwards, Martin Offiah, Wigan, Widnes. Started following the London Crusaders before the Brisbane Broncos (who at the time were the best Aussie team) took over the franchise. They sent loads of decent Aussies over to play for London Broncos. I saw them lose to Wigan in the Cup Final at Wembley. I also bizarrely was commissioned to implement my skeleton model for Opta stats to Rugby League having worked on football. I decided to fuck off to Uni instead. Played for a year and scored a try against Oxford Uni. I remember losing our first game about 90-0 to Luton and having 3 players go to hospital.

Haven’t watched hardly any league in years. Are Stevo and Eddie still alive? #trytime

It's only shitty because all of the Australian sides absolutely suck.

They used to be good, and the comp was great. Now, it's a competition between 5 NZ sides and the Lions from SA.

Once again, Australia letting the sporting world down, AGAIN.

Well played London Broncos, superb victory last night and brutal stuff at times.

No World Cup or Euros next Summer, so looking forward to watching the Broncos stuff all the Northern teams out of sight.

Never watched RL you say? You don't know what you're missing...

Re: London Broncos
They were formed a couple of years ago by an Australian businessman and have worked their way up.
The point of Super League was that it would be an international club competition. But Murdoch's heavy handed involvement was always resisted, especially in Australia, and it never really reached fruition.
Instead we have that shitty super rugby competition and whatever the European equivalent is.

Re: London Broncos
How does a team from Canada get to be one playoff from being in the top league?
Is it a bit like the Premier league announcing that whoever finishes 18th this season in the Premier League has to play against LA Galaxy for a spot next season?

Sounds a bit of a shambles to me
